The Gustavus Football Team opened its 2010 preseason camp Sunday, August 22. A total of 110 players reported to St. Peter eager to begin a new season wearing the black and gold. The Gusties look to an experienced defense and a balanced offensive attack to bring success in 2010, which will open on September 11 against Wartburg College at Lloyd Hollingsworth Field.
Head Coach Peter Haugen begins his second year at the helm, looking to improve on a 2009 campaign that saw the Gusties compile a record of 4-6 overall and 3-5 in the MIAC. Haugen shares the excitement with his players in beginning the 2010 season. “The first couple of days have been great,” Haugen acknowledged. “A lot of energy, it’s just a positive environment. Our veterans have done a great job of welcoming our new players and setting the bar for enthusiasm and work ethic.”
The Gusties return 34 letterwinners from last year’s squad, 16 on offense, 17 on defense, and one special teams player. Offensive starters returning include senior offensive lineman Chris Martinez, senior wide receiver Cody Sukalski, and junior wide receiver Elliott Herdina. On the defensive side of the ball, the starters returning are senior linebackers Paul Stommes, Zach Lundquist, and Dustin Kammerer, senior safety Mike Mohs, junior defensive linemen Tom Einberger and Todd Kremmin, junior cornerback Dan Opitz, and junior safety Brad Kruckeberg. The special teams returner is sophomore kicker Tom Huepenbecker.
