Janey Helland Named Central Region Field Athlete of the Year

Gustavus Adolphus junior Janey Helland (Mapleton, Minn) has been named the Central Region Women’s Field Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

At the MIAC Championships on May 14-15, Helland won both the heptathlon (4508 pts) and 400-meter hurdles (63.90), placed second in the long jump (17’ 10.25”), took fourth in the high jump (5’ 2.5”), and finished eighth in the javelin (111’ 7”).  Helland was honored as the most Outstanding Women’s Field Athlete following the meet.  She was also named MIAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week on May 10, after winning the MIAC Heptathlon.

Helland has compiled an impressive list of performances this spring.  She registered wins in the long jump at the Central Invitational, Lee Krough Invitational, Manitou Classic, Drake Alternative, Meet of UnSaintly, and Gustie Invitational.  Helland also added first place finishes in the 400-meter hurdles and high jump at the Gustie Invite, and 400-meter hurdles at the Drake Alternative.

Helland will compete in the heptathlon at the 2010 NCAA Track and Field Championships held in Berea, Ohio this weekend, May 27-29.  She enters the competition ranked sixth in the event with a score of 4508.
