The Gustavus women’s tennis team secured its 19th consecutive MIAC regular season title with a 6-3 win over Carleton on Saturday afternoon at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter, Minn. The Gusties took two of the three doubles matches and won every singles match from the third slot on down to finish their season with an overall record of 29-10 and a conference record of 10-0. Gustavus has now won 195 consecutive matches against MIAC foes in regular season play, a streak which dates back to the 1991 season.
Megan Gaard won her tenth consecutive MIAC singles match to stay unbeaten against conference opponents. Ali O’Neal also capped off a perfect season in conference play with her ninth singles victory of the season. Alex Erickson and Sam Frank added a pair of singles wins to give the Gusties four singles victories on the day. In other singles matches today, Sierra Krebsbach and Marianne Barau each suffered their first singles defeats in MIAC play.
In the doubles, the Gustie tandems of Barau and Gaard won their tenth match of the MIAC regular season to finish the season with an unblemished mark of 10-0. The pairing of O’Neal and Maria Bryan defeated their sixth different conference opponent to also finish undefeated on the season. The duo of Krebsbach and Frank suffered their second straight loss when playing together to account for the only Gustie defeat in doubles.
The Gusties now look ahead to next weekend’s MIAC Playoffs as the top seeded team in the tournament. The tournament will be hosted by Gustavus and will be held on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College.
