Softball Sweeps St. Ben’s, Clinches #2 Seed In MIAC Playoffs Posted on May 1st, 2010 by

The Gustavus softball team wrapped up regular season conference play with a doubleheader sweep of St. Ben’s in St. Joseph on Saturday afternoon.  The Gusties won game one 10-0 and then claimed game two 5-0.  Dani Cattrysse sparked the Gustavus offense as she was 4-for-4 at the plate with six RBI in the two games.

In the first game, Dani Cattrysse had a career game as she went 3-for-3 at the plate including a three-run home run and six RBI. Cattrysse’s three-run home run came in the second inning and extended the Gustie lead to 4-0.  She later drove in a single run in the fourth inning and finished with a two-run single in the fifth as Gustavus closed out the game with five runs.  Kirsten Prunty and MacKenzie Dalton  also had big days at the plate.  Prunty went 2-for-3 at the plate including a two-run home run in the fifth inning, while Dalton was 3-for-3 with three runs scored.  Betsie Collins pitched all five innings for Gustavus scattering four hits and striking out eight.

In the second game, the Gusties scored twice in the first inning and then added single runs in the second, third, and sixth innings on their way to the 5-0 victory.  Callie Nelsen pitched all seven innings for Gustavus scattering five hits and striking out 10.  Jenna Johnson and MacKenzie Dalton led the Gusties at the plate as Johnson was 2-for-3 with with two RBI and Dalton was 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored.

Cattrysse’s six RBI in game one tied the school record for RBI in a game that is held by both Audrey Lenoch and Julie Mahre.

With the two wins, Gustavus clinched a second place finish in the MIAC regular season standings with a record of 18-4 and earned the #2 seed in the MIAC Post-Season Tournament that will be hosted by the Gusties at Caswell Park in North Mankato next Friday and Saturday.

Gustavus will wrap up regular season play with non-conference doubleheaders against Central College on Sunday afternoon in St. Peter and St. Scholastica on Monday evening at the University of Minnesota.
