The Gustavus baseball team suffered its second MIAC sweep of the season with 11-10, and 11-6 losses at the hands of Bethel on Sunday afternoon in Arden Hills, Minn.  A two-out three-run home run by Drew Block brought the Gusties within one run in the bottom of the seventh inning in game one, yet they could not get the equalizer across the plate, leaving one runner stranded.  Bethel grabbed a 10-1 lead by the third inning of game two, forcing the Gusties to play catch-up and handing them the five-run loss.  Gustavus drops to 12-16 overall and 4-8 in the MIAC, while Bethel improves to 16-14 overall and 4-8 in the MIAC.

Derek Eddie (1-3) suffered the loss for Gustavus in game one, throwing three innings and giving up eight runs on eight hits.  Bethel used two four-run innings, in the first and fourth, to take a 10-4 lead on Gustavus with four innings complete.  Matt Rowley (2-0) picked up the win for Bethel, going five innings and giving up six runs on seven hits.

Gustavus was 13-for-31, while Bethel was 13-for-30 in game one.  Tim Miller and Cody Sukalski both had a good game at the plate, as Miller went 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI, and Sukalski went 3-for-4 with one run and three RBIs.  Both Alan Woitas and Tory Herman were 2-for-4 at the plate.

After going down 10-1 after the third inning in game two, Gustavus scored five runs on six hits in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 10-6.  In the inning, the Gusties hit back-to-back homers, as Miller hit a three-run shot, which was followed by a one-run homer by Sukalski.  That would be as close as the Gusties would get, as Chris Dent came in and threw three scoreless innings for Bethel, allowing only three hits and picking up the save.

David Freed (2-3) was the winning pitcher for the Royals, throwing four innings and giving up six runs on eight hits.  Andrew Woitas (0-2) threw one inning, giving up five runs on nine hits and suffering the loss.  Gustavus was 11-for-31 at the plate, as Bethel was 15-for-31.  Miller was 2-for-4 with one run and four RBIs, while Sukalski was 2-for-4 with one run and an RBI.

The Gustavus baseball team will travel to Moorhead, Minn. on Tuesday, April 27, to take on Concordia in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00pm.
