The Gustavus baseball team wrapped up its spring break trip to Arizona with a doubleheader split with Oberlin. The Gusties lost the first game 5-4 and then won the second game 7-3. The Gusties compiled a record of 6-2 in Arizona and are now 7-5 overall.
In game one, the score was tied 2-2, when Oberlin scored three times in the bottom of fifth to take a 5-2 lead. The Gusties scored once in the sixth to cut the lead to 5-3. In the seventh, Gustavus scored again to pull within a run at 5-4 and had the bases loaded, but could not get the tying run across the plate. Alan Woitas pitched two and two-thirds innings before being hit in the elbow with a line drive that forced him to leave the game. Woitas allowed three hits and two earned runs. Derek Eddie relieved Woitas and threw two and one-third innings allowing six hits and three earned runs. Andrew Woitas led Gustavus at the plate with three hits in four at-bats. Tory Herman went 2-for-4 with one RBI and Drew Block was 2-for-2.
In game two, Alan Woitas got the Gusties off to a quick start with a home run to lead off the game. Gustavus broke open a tight game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 7-2 lead. Cody Sukalski turned in a strong performance on mound picking up the complete game victory. He scattered 12 hits while striking out four and allowing three earned runs. Tim Miller was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Drew Block was 2-for-3.
Gustavus will play a doubleheader against UW-La Crosse in La Crosse on Monday, April 5 at 2:30 p.m.
