Strong goaltending by Danielle Justice and a first period goal by Tam Meuwissen allowed the Gustavus women’s hockey team to slip past Saint Mary’s 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Don Roberts Ice Rink.  The Gusties victory and a tie between St. Thomas and St. Kate’s allowed Gustavus to move into sole possession of first place with a record of 12-3-1.

The Gusties put 48 shots on goal but Cardinal netminder Kaye Collier allowed just one to get past her and into the Saint Mary’s net.  That goal came in the first four minutes of the game as Tam Meuwissen scored at the 3:55 mark with an assist from Mollie Carroll.

Gustavus will now enter the final week of regular season play in first place in the MIAC with a record of 12-3-1 and 25 points.  St. Kate’s, which defeated St. Thomas 3-1 on Friday and tied the Tommies 1-1 on Saturday, is one point back at 11-3-2 (24 points).  St. Thomas is in third place at 10-4-2 (22 points).  The Gusties will face Augsburg in the final series of the regular season next Friday and Saturday.  Gustavus can assure themselves of a sixth straight conference title with a two wins against the Auggies.
