The Gustavus men’s soccer team got a second half goal from Grant Steine to tie the score at 1-1, but that would be the only goal of the night for the Gusties as they had to settle for a 1-1 tie in two overtimes. Gustavus is now 4-2-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the MIAC.
The first half was very evenly played statistically, but the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Steve Boussie in the 27th minute. Saint Mary’s would take their 1-0 lead into the intermission.
In the second half, the Gusties started to control play and tied the match on Steine’s goal in the 57th minute with an assist from Fraser Horton. Gustavus dominated the second forty-five minutes statistically outshooting the Cardinals 11-3, but the Cardinals got some big saves from Jon Szafranski and sent the match to overtime.
In the overtime, Gustavus continue to control play outshooting Saint Mary’s 7-1 in the two 10-minute extra sessions, however Szafranski came up with four more saves and the Gusties had to settle for the 1-1 tie.
Gustavus held a 24-9 advantage in shots and a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks, while the Cardinals committed nearly twice as many fouls with 13 whistles compared to seven for Gustavus.
The Gusties will return home to host St. Olaf on Saturday at 1 pm.
