The Gustavus volleyball team opened the 2009 season with a 3-1 loss to St. Olaf College on Tuesday night in St. Peter. Gustavus was led offensively by Olivia Warren, who recorded 11 kills, while Jenny Ewert led the defense with 14 digs. St. Olaf was led by Kim Smisek with 13 kills and 15 digs.

Gustavus fell behind early dropping the first set to the Ole’s by the score of 25-16. The Gusties cut the lead to 14-10 in the first set, but the Oles countered with a 5-0 run to make the score 19-11 and St. Olaf never looked back on its way to claiming the first set. St. Olaf continued to put the pressure on the young Gusties extending its lead to two sets to none with a 25-18 victory in the second set. Once again the Gusties stayed close early, but the Oles pulled away late. Gustavus came out sharp in the third set and jumped out to an early 15-5 lead, before St. Olaf started to battle back. The Gusties led 20-10 when the Oles used a 10-4 run to cut the Gustavus lead to 24-20. An Olivia Warren kill gave the Gusties the third set win by the score of 25-20. In the fourth set, the Gusties made a strong push after they were down 17-23, and closed the gap to 20-24 before the Oles’ closed out the match at 20-25.

Gustavus was led offensively by Olivia Warren with 11 kills, and Angela Ahrendt with seven. Setters Sam Broderius and Malea Noennig recorded 14 and 13 assists, respectively. Ewert led the team defensively with 14 digs, while Nicki Ainsworth contributed 11.

The Gusties travel to Eau Claire, Wisconsin this weekend to take part in the UW-Eau Claire Invitational. Gustavus plays UW-Stout (3 pm) and Judson (5:15 pm) on Friday, and St. Scholastica (12:15 pm) and UW-Eau Claire (2:30 pm) on Saturday.
