The Gustavus softball team was unable to get past St. Thomas in the MIAC Post-Season Tournament falling to the Tommies twice in the two-day tournament and finishing second after a 4-3 loss in the Tournament Championship game on Saturday afternoon. The Gusties defeated Hamline 5-4 in eight innings on Saturday morning to advance to the finale against St. Thomas. Gustavus, which is now will now 35-7 overall, must wait until Monday morning to see if they will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Gusties got down 4-0 to Hamline and then rallied to defeat the Pipers 5-4 in eight innings. Emily Klein drove a two-out single into left field scoring pinch runner Mackenzie Weber from second base with the winning run. Erin Truebenbach pitched the final five innings of the game and picked up the win for the Gusties.
Against St. Thomas, the Gusties again got down 4-0, and then rallied to make the game close, but this time they were unable to complete the comeback and claim the win. Jenna Johnson had a big game for the Gusties as she picked up the only two hits of the game for Gustavus. Johnson drove in two runs with a single in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 4-2 and then hit a home run to open the seventh to make the score 4-3. The Gusties made the bottom of the seventh interesting as Kelly Myers and Lisa Klass ripped line drives to left field, but Missy Bruggeman came up with two highlight reel catches to end the rally for Gustavus.
