Gustavus Women’s Tennis Wins Twice, Advances To Semifinals Of Midwest Invitational Posted on April 3rd, 2009 by

The Gustavus women’s tennis team posted a first round 7-2 win over Carthage and then surprised Washington University 5-4 in the quarterfinals of the Midwest Invitational, which is being played in Madison, Wisc. The Gusties will now face #5 Denison in the semifinals on Saturday morning at 7:15 am. The winner of the Gustavus/Denison match will face the winner of the Chicago/DePauw match in the championship match, while the loser’s of the semifinal matches will play for third place on Saturday afternoon. Gustavus, which is ranked #17 in the latest ITA Div. III poll, improves to 12-7 overall.

Notes:
The Gusties trailed Washington University 3-4 when Ali O’Neal defeated Elise Sambol to tie the match at 4-4 and then Sierra Krebsbach secured the upset for Gustavus when she defeated Jaclyn Bild 10-5 in the superbreaker.

The Midwest Invitational is an 11-team tournament held in Madison, Wis. in order for the top teams in the Midwest Region to get a chance to play each other to help determine regional rankings. The teams taking part in the tournament are from seven states including Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana, and Ohio. Eight of the 11 teams in the tournament are ranked in the top 25 in the most recent ITA Division III poll including University of Chicago (#5), Denison (#9), Washington University (#12), DePauw (#13), UW-Whitewater (#16), Gustavus Adolphus (#17), Wheaton (#21), Coe (#22).
