The Gustavus women’s hockey team broke open a tight game with two third period goals on its way to a 3-0 win over Saint Mary’s on Saturday afternoon. Lynn Hillen, Christine Wicker, and Alyssa Gaulrapp scored for the Gusties and goaltender Emily Klatt recorded 12 saves on her way to her recording her second consecutive shutout. Gustavus is now 3-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the MIAC.
The Gusties jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 3:08 of the first period when Lynn Hillen scored an even strength goal with assists from Christine Wicker and Kirstin Peterson. The Gusties out-shot the Cardinals 23-3 in the period, but could only manage the one goal and led 1-0 after the first 20 minutes of play.
After playing through a scoreless second period, the Gusties extended their lead to 2-0 on a goal by Christine Wicker just :14 seconds into the third period. Lynn Hillen and Alyssa Saunders were credited with assists. First year forward Alyssa Gaulrapp tallied the first goal of her collegiate career and closed out the scoring for the Gusties with a power play goal with just :20 left in the game. Jenny Pusch was credited with the assist.
Gustavus out-shot the Cardinals 49-12 in the match. Emily Klatt improved her record to 2-0 on the season. Klatt has not allowed a goal in 120 minutes of play and sports a perfect 0.00 goals against average.
The 3-0 victory was the 200th career win for head coach Mike Carroll. Carroll, who is in his 10th season at Gustavus, has compiled an overall record of 200-52-11 and a 78.3 winning percentage. Carroll is just the second head coach in the history of Division III women’s hockey to reach the 200 win plateau and his 78.3 win percentage ranks third all-time in Division III women’s hockey amongst active coaches.
