The 14th-ranked Gustavus men’s hockey team registered a shutout in its MIAC season opener with a 6-0 victory over Saint Mary’s on Friday night in Winona, Minn. Head Coach Brett Petersen and the Gusties scored three goals in the first period, including two goals from defenseman Cody Mosbeck (Jr., Emo, Ontario). Goaltender Josh Swartout (So., St. Louis Park, Minn.) registered the third shutout of his career with 24 saves as Gustavus improved to 4-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the MIAC. The Cardinals fell to 0-5-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference.
Saint Mary’s had the first scoring chances of the game when it had a skater advantage for four minutes in the early stages of the first period. During that span, the Cardinals were held to four shots. Thirty seconds after getting back to even strength, Gustavus broke the scoreless tie when Mosbeck scored his first goal of the game with a pass from Patrick Dynan (Jr., Maple Plain, Minn.) at the 6:00 mark.
With the first period winding down, David Martinson (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) scored his ninth goal of the season with assists being credited to Swartout and Brad Wieck (So., Shoreview, Minn.) to give the Gusties a two-goal lead. Gustavus was not done though as it took advantage of its fourth power-play opportunity of the game when Mosbeck tallied his second goal of the game at 18:47. Matt Schugel (So., Roseville, Minn.) had the assist as the Gusties went into the locker room with a 3-0 lead.
The Cardinals changed goaltenders between periods, but that did not prevent Gustavus from adding another goal in the second period. The Gusties extended the margin to 4-0 after Wieck found Ross Ring-Jarvi (Fy., Anoka, Minn.) for his second goal of the season with 7:39 on the clock.
Saint Mary’s had two power-play chances in the first five minutes of the third period, but the Gustavus penalty kill unit allowed two shots on goal. Justin Lee (Fy., Excelsior, Minn.) added the fifth goal of the game for the Gusties after receiving a pass from Mitch Carlson (So., St. Louis Park, Minn.) with 11:20 remaining in the game. Less than two minutes later, Gustavus struck again as Rory Dynan (Jr., Maple Plain, Minn.) found the back of the net with his third goal of the season. Casey Dynan (Jr., Maple Plain, Minn.) and Schugel got the assists as the Gusties skated to the 6-0 win.
Coach Petersen’s team had 10 power play chances, but were only able to convert one of them. The Cardinals were 0-for-5 with the extra skater. Gustavus outshot Saint Mary’s 43-24 in the contest. Josh Swartout improved his record to 2-1-0 overall after making 24 saves. Scott Pederson allowed three goals on 15 shots in the first period to suffer the loss for the Cardinals. Greg Moore replaced Pederson between the pipes stopping 25 shots in the second and third period, while allowing three goals.
Gustavus will wrap up the series against Saint Mary’s on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. in Mankato, Minn. at All Seasons Arena.
