Junior David Martinson (St. Louis Park, Minn.) scored a power play goal midway through the third period to break a 5-5 tie to help the Gustavus men’s hockey team defeat No. 11 UW-Stout 6-5 in Menomonie, Wis. on Friday night. Head Coach Brett Petersen’s squad converted three of four power plays opportunities including Martinson’s game-winning goal to improve to 2-1-0 overall. UW-Stout fell to 4-2-0 with the loss.
UW-Stout started the scoring when Derek Hanson scored on the first power play chance of the game to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead at the 5:30 mark in the first period. Gustavus evened the game at 1-1 when Martinson scored an unassisted power play goal at 10:47. UW-Stout regained the lead 29 seconds later when Jeff Wheeler found the back of the net to give the Blue Devils a 2-1 advantage heading into the first intermission.
UW-Stout struck first in the second period to take a 3-1 lead after a goal from Jared Britton. The Gusties responded with three goals in a six-minute span for their first lead of the game at 4-3. Matt Schugel (So., Roseville, Minn.) started the rally when he scored after receiving a pass from Ross Ring-Jarvi (Fy., Anoka, Minn.) at 10:22. One minute later, Spencer Campion (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) found Patrick Dynan (Maple Plain, Minn.), who got a shot past Blue Devil goaltender Matt Koenig to tie the score. Eric Bigham (Jr., Robbinsdale, Minn.) added his second goal of the season to complete the comeback as Gustavus skated into the third period with a 4-3 lead.
The Gusties extended their lead to 5-3 when Mitch Carlson (So., St. Louis Park, Minn.) scored another power play goal at 2:21 in the third period with the assists going to James Leathers (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) and Bigham. However, UW-Stout would not go down without a fight as it erased the deficit with goals from Nick Klaren and Joel Whited.
With 11:49 left in the game, the Blue Devils were called for a holding penalty. As the power play chance dwindled, Martinson scored his seventh goal of the season on a pass from Ring-Jarvi to give Gustavus a 6-5 edge. UW-Stout had one last opportunity late in the game when Wheeler hit the pipe, but could not get the puck past Gustie goaltender Josh Swartout (So., St. Louis Park, Minn.) as Gustavus hung on for the win.
Four Gusties finished the game with multiple points including Martinson with two goals, Ring-Jarvi with two assists, and Patrick Dynan and Bigham with a goal and an assist. Swartout made 26 saves, as Gustavus was outshot 31-26. Klaren led the Blue Devils with a goal and two assists, while Koenig made 20 saves and allowing six goals.
