The Gustavus volleyball team advanced to the finals of the MIAC Tournament with a 3-0 win (27-25, 25-16, 25-17) over Saint Mary’s on Thursday night in St. Peter. The Gusties will now play St. Thomas in the playoff championship match on Saturday night at 7:00 pm in St. Paul, Minn. The winner receives an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.

The first set was a real see-saw affair with both teams having a chance to close out the match. Their were 12 ties and seven lead changes before the Gusties won 27-25.

Gustavus hit .216 in the match recording 45 kills in 148 attempts with 13 errors. The Cardinals hit .071 with 33 kills in 140 attempts with 23 errors.

The Gusties held a big advantage in blocks with four block solos and 12 block assists, compared to one block solo and four block assists for Saint Mary’s.

Gustavus, which is ranked #17 in the most recent AVCA Division III poll, improves to 26-3 overall, while Saint Mary’s bows out of the tournament at 19-13.
