The Gustavus women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with the Scots from Macalester College on Senior Day in St. Peter, Minn. Ashley Anderson tied the score with her third goal of the season in the 59h minute when she re-directed a cross from Megan Gode past goalkeeper Jenny Lee. Ashley Ohlson played in goal for the Gusties and got the tie. With the draw, Gustavus moves to 6-7-3 (4-4-2 in the MIAC), while Macalester moves to 8-7-2 (5-3-2 in the MIAC).
In what turned out to be a physical match, the Gusties were able to come back from a one-goal deficit to earn one point. The two teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes, but then the Scots took a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute when Liz Hormann got a pass from Jenna Machado and fired a shot from 25 yards out that beat Ohlson. The Gusties were able to strike back quickly as Megan Gode got the ball on the right side and beat a Macalester defender around the corner. She sent a perfect cross to the front of the goal that an onrushing Ashley Anderson re-directed into the corner of the goal past Lee tying the match at one. The goal was the third of the season for Anderson, while Gode got her first point of the season with the assist. The Gusties held a 16-6 advantage in shots and an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks in the match.
Gustavus has still not defeated the Scots since 1995, despite three ties and have been outscored by a 24-3 margin. Tomorrow, the Gusties will head to Storm Lake, Iowa for a non-conference match with the Beavers from Buena Vista University.
