Gustavus men’s tennis player, John Kauss, continued moving through the singles draw at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Small College Championships on Friday in Mobile, Alabama. Kauss surprised the singles field by upsetting top-seeded John Watts of Washington University (St. Louis, Missouri) in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Later in the day, Kauss and Mike Burdakin took second place in the doubles portion as the duo lost to Chris Goodwin and Michael Goodwin of Emory University 7-6 (3), 6-1.
Kauss will face Chris Goodwin of Emory University again in the singles championship match on Saturday at 8:30 am (EDT). Goodwin defeated Conrad Olson of Middlebury College 6-1, 7-5 in the other semifinal match of the day. The winner will advance to the “Super Bowl” portion of the ITA Small College Championships which will pit the winners of the NCAA II, II, NAIA and Junior College divisions.
