Men’s Tennis Falls to Washington University 5-0 In NCAA Quarterfinal Match Posted on May 13th, 2008 by

The Gustavus men’s tennis team lost to Washington University of St. Louis 5-0 in a NCAA Quarterfinal match on Tuesday evening. The NCAA Championship is being hosted by Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. The Gusties, who failed to advance the semifinal round at the NCAA Tournament for only the second time in the past nine years, finish the season with a record of 29-6.

The Gusties got off to a slow start against Washington University losing all three doubles matches. Andy Bryan and Charlie Paukert lost 8-5 at #1, Mike Burdakin and John Kauss lost 8-6 at #2, and Nick Hansen and Ben Tomasek lost 8-1 at #3.

The Bears picked up two straight set wins in singles to close out the match at 5-0. Aaron Zenner lost at #5 singles 0-6, 5-7, and Kevin Stickney lost at #6 singles 0-6, 1-6. Andy Bryan, who is ranked #2 nationally won the first set of his match against #1 John Watts 7-5, however the match was stopped when the Bears clinched the match with their fifth point.

Andy Bryan and John Kauss will compete in the singles tournament which begins on Friday, and Bryan will team with Charlie Paukert to take part in doubles tournament which also begins on Friday.
