Women’s Tennis Defeats Wheaton 5-2 At Midwest Invitational Posted on April 4th, 2008 by

On a sunny day in Madison, Wis., the 13th-ranked Gustavus women’s tennis team defeated 25th-ranked Wheaton (IL) 5-2 in the second round of the Midwest Invitational, as the Gusties earned a first-round bye in the tournament. Gustavus, which is now 13-6 overall, will face sixth-ranked Denison at the Midwest Invitational in Madison, Wis. on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. followed by a match at 2:30 p.m. regardless of the outcome of the morning match.

The Gusties got out to an early 2-1 lead after the completion of doubles play as the #1 doubles tandem of Jenni White and Sierra Krebsbach and the #2 doubles duo of Sam Frank and Ali O’Neal prevailed by the scores of 8-6 and 8-2, respectively.

Ali O’Neal dropped the first set, 5-7, against Brooke Parrish at #3 singles before winning the second set and the third set tiebreaker, 6-1 and 10-2. Sierra Krebsbach and Sam Frank provided straight set wins for the Gusties at the #2 and #4 singles spots. Wheaton’s Jordan Hook, the top-ranked singles player in the Central Region, defeated Jenni White 6-2, 7-5. After the match was decided, play was suspended as Gustavus’ Erica Dobson lost the first set to Sara Federschmidt and Gustavus’ Jenny Arnfelt won the first set against Kayli Edwards.
