Men’s Tennis Loses To Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 7-2 Posted on March 26th, 2008 by

The Gustavus men’s tennis team lost to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 7-2 on Wednesday afternoon in Claremont, California. It was the first loss for the Gusties to a Division III opponent this season. Gustavus is currently ranked #1 in the latest ITA Division III poll, while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is ranked #7. Gustavus is now 18-3 on the season.

#1 – Guillaume Schils/Lawrence Wang (CMS) defeated Andy Bryan/Charlie Paukert (GA) 9-8 (7-1 in the tiebreaker)
#2 – Ben Hough/Eric MacColl (CMS) defeated John Kauss/Mike Burdakin (GA) 8-3
#3 – Mikey Lim/Ronald Wu (CMS) defeated Nick Hansen/Ben Tomasek (GA) 8-3

Singles
#1 – Andy Bryan (GA) defeated Lawrence Wang (CMS) 6-4, 1-6, 6-4
#2 – John Kaus (GA) defeated Mikey Lim (CMS) 6-4, 6-4
#3 – Eric MacColl (CMS) defeated Mike Burdakin (GA) 6-4, 6-4
#4 – Michael Starr (CMS) defeated Charlie Paukert (GA) 6-4, 4-6, 6-1
#5 – Ronald Wu (CMS) defeated Ben Tomasek (GA) 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 in the tiebreaker
#6 – Andrew Sabater (CMS) defeated Aaron Zenner (GA) 6-1, 6-1

There were several key matchups in this match between two of the top Division III teams in the country.

In doubles play, the #4 ranked Gustavus team of Andy Bryan and Charlie Paukert lost to #5 ranked Guillaume Schils and Lawrence Wang 8-9. Schils and Wang won the tiebreaker 7-1.

In singles play, #2 ranked Andy Bryan defeated #17 Lawrence Wang at the #1 position, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, while #13 John Kauss defeated #4 ranked Mikey Lim at the #2 position 6-4, 6-4.

The Gusties will play #11 University of Redlands on Thursday afternoon as they continue their spring break trip to Southern California.
