Men’s Swimming and Diving Improve To 14th Place After Second Day Of NCAA Championships

The Gustavus men’s swimming and diving team improved to 14th place with 67 points after the second day of the NCAA Championships, which are being hosted by The College of Wooster. Kenyon College remained in first place with 429 points, well ahead of Denison University, which was in second place with 246.5 points.

Junior Matt Stewart again turned in the top performance of the day as he finished sixth in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:39.89. Teammate senior Ben Hanson finished in 12th place with a time of 1:40.90.

The 800 freestyle relay team of Dave Pearson, Skylar Davis, Stewart, and Hanson finished in sixth place with a time of 6:44.64 to set new school and MIAC records. The old school and MIAC record was 6:47.25, which was set by Gustavus last year.

Stewart and the 800 freestyle relay team earned All-America honors by virtue of finishing in the top eight at the national meet, while Hanson earned honorable mention All-America.

The championships wrap up on Saturday with prelims beginnnig at 10 am. The finals will commence at 5:30 pm.
