The Gustavus women’s hockey team received word on Monday that it would host a first round contest in the 2007-08 NCAA Division III National Tournament. Coach Mike Carroll’s squad, which has compiled a record of 25-2-0, received an automatic bid in the tournament after winning the MIAC Playoff Championship game last Wednesday. The Gusties, who are ranked #2 in the recent USCHO.com poll, will host sixth-ranked University of Wisconsin in Superior, which is 22-4-1, on Saturday, March 15 at 2 p.m.
This is the fifth consecutive national tournament appearance for the Gustavus women’s hockey team and the sixth time that its program has received an invitation to the NCAA Tournament (2001-02, 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, and 2007-08). The Gusties finished in third place in 2001-02 and 2004-05.
Saturday afternoon’s contest will mark the ninth all-time meeting between Gustavus and UW-Superior, as the Gusties hold an 8-0-1 mark against the Yellowjackets. UW-Superior was the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association regular season and post-season champions. The winner of Saturday’s game will face the winner of Middlebury/Manhattanville on March 21 in Plattsburgh, N.Y.
