The Gustavus women’s gymnastics team closed out the meet with a 44.65 on the floor exercise and it proved to be just enough to edge UW-Oshkosh 177.150 to 176.950 in a dual meet that was held in the Lund Center Forum on the Gustavus campus in St. Peter, Minn. Jennifer Berglund led the Gusties with a first place finish on the floor exercise with a score of 9.225.
Gustavus posted individual event scores of 45.30 on the vault, 42.70 on the uneven bars, 44.50 on the balance beam, and 44.650 on the floor exercise. UW-Oshkosh posted individual event scores of 45.375 on the vault, 43.875 on the uneven bars, 43.425 on the balance beam, and 44.275 on the floor exercise.
In the all-around, UW-Oshkosh’s Stacie Jenkins finished first with a total of 35.60, which just edged Gustavus’ Kelly Mathewson (Fy., Eden Prairie, Minn.) with a total of 35.50. Mathewson registered scores of 9.025 on the vault, 8.325 on the uneven bars, 8.975 on the balance beam, and 9.175 on the floor exercise. Vanessa Virbitsky of UW-Oshkosh placed third in the all-around with a total of 35.025.
UW-Oshkosh garnered first place finishes in three of the four individual event competitions as Vanessa Virbitsky won the vault (9.30), Kelly Busacker won the uneven bars (9.275), and Rachel Morrison won the balance beam (9.00). Jennifer Berglund claimed the lone event title for the Gusties as she won the floor exercise (9.225).
Other top finishes for Gustavus included Aryn Bell (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Jessica Dolan (Jr., Milroy, Minn.) tying for second on the vault with scores of 9.150, Laura Hansen (Jr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) placing second on the uneven bars (9.150) and second on the balance beam (8.975), and Kelly Mathewson finishing second on the balance beam (8.975) and the floor exercise (9.175).
Gustavus will compete against UW-Stout in a dual meet next Friday in Menomonie, Wis. The meet is set to begin at 6:00 pm.
