The Gustavus men’s hockey team earned a split of the weekend series with Augsburg by claiming a 2-1 win in Minneapolis on Saturday night. David Martinson’s goal at 5:38 of the third period proved to be the gamewinner. Josh Swartout earned the win in the nets. The Gusties improve to 10-10-1 overall and 7-5-0 in the MIAC.

Augsburg jumped out to a 1-0 on a goal by Joel Sauer at the 4:05 mark of the first period. Gustavus tied the game at 1-1 on a goal by Eric Bigham at the 12:43 mark of the first period. Joe Welch and Tony Palma were credited with assists on the goal.

The two teams battled through a scoreless second period, before Martinson tallied the gamewinner at 5:38 of the third period. Ben Ollila and Mitch Carlson picked up assists.

The Gusties outshot the Auggies 35-21 in the contest. First goaltender Josh Swartout picked up the win in the nets for Gustavus as he allowed one goal and recorded 23 saves. Andy Kent suffered the loss in the nets for Augsburg.

Gustavus will face St. John’s in a critical league series next weekend.
