Gustavus senior Chris deLaubenfels (Mount Vernon, Iowa) will compete at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships hosted by St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. this Saturday. deLaubenfels, who finished 11th at the NCAA Central Region Championships last Saturday, will compete in a field of 357 runners.
deLaubenfels has improved greatly over the course of his career after placing 114th at the 2005 MIAC Championships as a sophomore. The following year he jumped to 14th at the 2006 MIAC Championships as a junior to earn all-conference honors, while placing 41st at the NCAA Regional Championships.
This season, despite suffering an early season injury, deLaubenfels finished fourth at the 2007 MIAC Championships for the highest finish by a male runner since Dimitri Drekonja finished second in 1993. deLaubenfels’ performance helped lead the team to a fifth place finish, the highest placing since the squad placed fourth in 1994. Success carried over to the NCAA Central Region Championships as he finished 11th, while the team finished seventh. The individual performance by deLaubenfels was the highest finish by a male Gustavus runner since Steffan Freeman finished 11th at the 1998 regional championships. The Gustie team performance was the best finish at the regional championships since 1992 when the squad finished fourth.
The NCAA Championship men’s race will begin at 12:00 pm (Central Standard Time) on Saturday, November 17 in Northfield, Minn.
