The Gustavus men’s hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead but could not hold off the hard charging UW-Stout Blue Devils who rallied to claim the 3-2 win and improve to 7-0-0 on the season. The Gusties, who got goals from David Martinson and Eric Bigham, fall to 2-2-0 on the season.

Gustavus got on the scoreboard first in the game when David Martinson scored a shorthanded goal at 13:01 of the first period. The Gusties increased their lead to 2-0 when Eric Bigham scored an even strength goal six minutes later (19:01). Gustavus outshot UW-Stout 13-2 in the first period.

The Blue Devils came out fired up in the second period and turned the tables on the Gusties by scoring twice in the period and tying the score at 2-2. Derek Hanson cut the lead to 2-1 with an even strength goal at the 3:46 mark and then Jake Gullickson tied the score at 2-2 with a goal at the 12:50 mark. The score was tied at 2-2 through two periods. The Blue Devils outshot the Gusties 11-6 in the period.

Paul Henderson scored what turned out to be the game-winner at 2:09 of the third period. Both teams had several good scoring opportunities in the third period, however neither could get the puck across the goal line the rest of the game.

Josh Swartout made 18 saves in the game and suffered the loss in the nets. Matt Koenig picked up the win in the nest.
