The Gustavus men’s swimming team fell in its 2007-08 dual meet opener with a 111.5-127.5 loss to Minnesota State University, Mankato, while the Gustavus women’s swimming team dropped its dual opener to MSU, Mankato 65-176. The meet was held on the MSU, Mankato campus Saturday afternoon.
Gustavus Men’s Swimming Highlights
Freshman Whitaker Davis (Palatine, Ill.) was the top Gustie finisher throughout the day as he won the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.96) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:48.36). Davis finished 14 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher in the 500-yard freestyle.
Ben Hanson finished first in the 1000-yard freestyle 20 seconds ahead of the next competitor with a time of 10:09.59.
The Gustavus 200-yard freestyle relay team of Jonah Winter (Sr., Park Rapids, Minn.), Tyler Wakefield (Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.), Dave Pearson (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) and Whitaker Davis took first-place honors in 1:29.29.
Other first place finishers for the Gusties included Matt Stewart (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) in the 100-yard butterfly (52.43) and Clement Auyeung (Jr., North Mankato, Minn.) in the 50-yard freestyle (22.21).
The MSU, Mankato victory marked the second time in ten years the Mavericks have defeated Gustavus.
Gustavus Women’s Swimming Highlights
The lone bright spot in the day was Carrie Gundersen (So., Minnetonka, Minn.) was the only female Gustie swimmer to claim first-place in an event at the meet. Gundersen won the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:03.51.
Alyssa Henkel (Fy., Stillwater, Minn.) finished second in three-meter diving with 186.50 points.
The Gusties’ strongest showing was in the 100-yard breaststroke with Gustavus swimmers finishing in second place through seventh place.
Gustavus fell to the Mavericks for the fourth consecutive year.
