The Gustavus women’s soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to St. Thomas in double overtime on Saturday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn. The Tommies’ Erin Sprangers scored the game-winner with :10 left in the second overtime with a hard shot into the left corner of the net from about eight yards out. The Gustavus goal was scored by Amy Kunkel in the 62nd minute. The Gusties end their season at 8-10-0 overall and 3-8-0 in the MIAC.

St. Thomas took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Betsy Messner with an assist from Emma Welton in the 17th minute. The Tommies, who out-shot Gustavus 9-7 in the first half, led 1-0 at the intermission.

The Gusties evened the score at 1-1 when Jenna Iaizzo fired a shot at the St. Thomas goal the ricocheted off the cross bar and onto the foot of Amy Kunkel who pushed it into the right corner of the net at the 62:28 mark.

The rest of the match was very evenly played with both squads having a couple of good scoring opportunities, but neither could tally the game-winner.

It appeared that the game would end in a tie when the Tommies made a late rush up the field and got the ball to Sprangers in the box who fired a hard shot that got past Gustavus goalkeeper Ashley Ohlson with just :10 left in the match for the game-winner.

St. Thomas completed its season with a record of 10-7-1 overall and 5-5-1 in the MIAC, while Gustavus finished up at 8-10-0 overall and 3-8-0 in the MIAC.
