On a beautiful fall afternoon, the Gustavus men’s cross country team ran its best race of the season finishing fifth with 134 points at the MIAC Cross Country Championships Saturday in St. Paul. The fifth place finish at the conference meet was the highest since 1994 when the squad finished fourth. St. John’s claimed its second consecutive title with 49 points. Chris deLaubenfels (Sr., Mount Vernon, Iowa) finished fourth amidst strong competition with a time of 25:47, garnering all-conference honors for the second consecutive season.
Alex Horton (Sr., Northfield, Ill.) was the surprise in this year’s meet finishing in 26:28, good enough for a 19th-place finish and all-conference honorable mention honors. John Leaf (Jr., Center City, Minn.) improved on last year’s 55th-place finish by running a 26:31 time for 22nd-place. Another runner who drastically improved his finish from a year ago was Alex Prieve (Jr., Faribault, Minn.), who moved from 88th-place to 49th-place, running a 27:33. Dan Foley (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) finished in 44th-place with a time of 27:23.
Coach Friedrich’s squad will compete at NCAA Central Regional Meet in Northfield, Minn. Saturday, October 6.
