Despite a chilly morning in Falcon Heights, Minn., the Gustavus women’s cross country team finished seventh with 274 points at the 42-team Roy Griak Invitational Saturday morning. First place team Washington University (MO) had five runners finish in the top 35 to win with 89 points. Senior Laura Edlund (Forest Lake, Minn.) led Gustavus with 21st-place finish in 23:39.
First-year runners Megan Lundgren (Mankato, Minn.) and Kate Reins (Osseo, Minn.) ran strong races for the Gusties. Lundgren finished 38th with a time of 24:06, while Reins had a 24:22 finish for 46th-place. Senior Sarah Bernhardson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) continues working towards returning to top form after an early season injury finishing in 67th-place with a time of 24:35. Senior Sarah Willis (Willmar, Minn.) rounded out the top five at 25:03 for 102nd-place.
Coach Friedrich’s squad turned in a solid performance finishing ahead of five teams ranked in this week’s regional poll. St. Olaf and St. Thomas were the only MIAC teams to finish ahead of Gustavus in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
The Gusties will compete at the MSU-Mankato Open Saturday, October 6th at 10:30 am.
