Several Upsets Occur During First Day of Men’s ITA Midwest Regional Tournament Posted on September 28th, 2007 by

The first day of the 2007 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Men’s Tennis Tournament is complete with four of the top ten seeds knocked out of singles play, along with the second-seeded doubles team being upset. All rounds scheduled for Friday were completed thanks to beautiful weather in St. Peter. Play will resume at 9 am on Saturday morning at the Swanson Tennis Center.

The seeds in the doubles draw held, except for the #2 seeded team of Sergio Lopez and Miguel Yunes of Carthage who lost in the second round. Joey Van Lieshout and Dale Wroblewski of UW-Lacrosse defeated the #2 seed from Carthage 8-5. The third round, quarterfinal, and semifinal doubles matches will be played late Saturday afternoon.

In singles play, seeds #4, #7, and #8 all fell in the third round, while the #10 seed lost in the second round. Aaron Zenner of Gustavus knocked off #4 Robin Borg of UW-Whitewater 6-3, 7-5. Ben Tomasek of Gustavus defeated #7 Winston Park of Carleton 2-6, 6-3, 1-0(10-5). Johnny Reed of UW-Whitewater beat #10 Kartheek Koneru of Carleton 6-1, 4-6, 1-0(10-5). Eighth-seed Gianandrea Heyer of UW-Whitewater fell to Nick Hansen of Gustavus 7-5, 1-6, 1-0(10-2). Seven Gustavus players advanced to the fourth round with four being seeded players. The fourth round of the singles draw will begin at 9:00 am on Saturday morning at the Brown Outdoor Courts on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus. The fourth and quarterfinal round of the singles draw will be played on Saturday.

The tournament will conclude with the semifinal and final singles matches and the final doubles match on Sunday afternoon.
