The Gustavus women’s golf team turned in one of its finest rounds of the season in very difficult conditions and the result was an impressive four shot win over St. Thomas at the Division III Midwest Classic hosted by Carleton and played at Troy Burne Golf Club in Hudson, Wis. The Gusties finished with a total of 342-319–661, while the Tommies finished at 330-335–665. Senior Rachel Roberg tied for first individually with a 36-hole total of 78-79–157.
The Gusties fired a first round total of 342 and trailed the Tommies, who posted a score of 330, by 12 strokes. However, on day two with winds gusting up to 35 mph, Gustavus carded a team total of 319, which was 16 better than St. Thomas (335) and 24 shots better than third place Wartburg. The key performances turned in on Sunday for Gustavus included Kali Griggs and Kimbra Kosak with identical scores of 78, Rachel Roberg with a 79, and Amanda Johnson with an 84.
For the tournament, Gustavus was led by Rachel Roberg who tied for medalist honors with a 36-hole total of 78-79–157. Roberg tied Laura Heck of St. Thomas. Kali Griggs finished in a tie for third with a total of 85-78–163, followed by Kimbra Kosak in seventh at 89-78–167, Amanda Johnson in 20th at 94-84–178, Katie Schenfeld in 30th at 90-93–183, and Lauren Runsvold in 48th at 96-94–190.
The Gusties will take part in the Best Western Riverport Classic in Winona, Minn. next Sunday, Sept. 30 and Monday, Oct. 1.
