The Gustavus men’s soccer team opened its 2007 season with a convincing 3-0 win over Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. Senior forward Mike Butterworth (Katy, Texas) scored the game’s first goal in the 28th minute and added an assist later in the match. Sophomore forward Bret Vander Streek (Pella, Iowa) also tallied a goal and an assist in the victory. Senior Trevor Brown (Madison, Wis.) made three saves, all in the second half, to record the win between the posts for the Gusties.
Mike Butterworth broke the ice at 28:46 on a corner kick from senior Ryan Beduhn (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn.) for the only score in the first half. The Gustavus defense held Simpson to just one shot during the half.
The Gusties struck again at 67:55 with senior Jeffrey Johnson (Sr., Tonka Bay, Minn.) scoring from 10 yards out on a pass from Bret Vander Streek. Less than five minutes later Gustavus added to their lead with a goal from Vander Streek with the assist going to Butterworth.
Gustavus came out firing in its’ first match of the season out-shooting Simpson 19-7 and holding a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Gustavus goalkeeper Trevor Brown made three saves while recording the first shutout of the season. Goalkeeper Josh Youngman made six saves and allowed three goals for Simpson.
Gustavus will face Grinnell College at 3:00 pm on Saturday in Grinnell, Iowa.
