Men’s Tennis to Participate in NCAA Championships

The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s tennis team will participate in the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships Tuesday-Sunday, May 15-20 at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Mo. Washington University in St. Louis is the host institution. Gustavus will face Williams (Mass.) in a quarterfinal match at 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 15. Individual competition in singles and doubles will follow team competition May 18-20.

The quarterfinal field for the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships is composed of eight of the top nine teams in the most recent ITA Division III men’s tennis rankings. The field is led by top-ranked UC-Santa Cruz, which defeated No. 2-ranked Redlands to reach the final eight. Also included in the field are co-No. 3’s Middlebury and Emory, No. 5 Gustavus Adolphus, No. 6 Williams, No. 7 Trinity (Texas), No. 8 DePauw, and No. 9 Washington University.

The individual championships shall consist of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. The selection of teams and individuals for the championships is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule and eligibility and availability of student-athletes. Men’s individual selections were announced May 7. Andy Bryan (Jr., Edina, Minn.) and Jesse Brauer (Sr., Mankato, Minn./West) were each selected for the 32-person singles draw while also teaming to fill one of the 16 spots in the doubles draw. Bryan (22-10) is the top-ranked Division III singles player in the ITA Central Region and is ranked fifth nationally. Brauer (26-9) is ranked fifth in the Central Region and 11th nationally in singles. The duo have also paired up to post an 18-9 record in doubles, ranking first in the Central Region and second nationally.
