Women’s Track and Field Second at MIAC Championships Posted on May 13th, 2007 by

The Gustavus Adolphus women’s track and field team finished second at the 2007 MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which concluded Saturday at Saint John’s University in Collegeville. The Gusties, who held a 21-point lead over St. Thomas and Carleton after the first day, finished with 104 points. The Tommies won their 23rd outdoor team title with 200.5 points, while Bethel and Carleton tied for third with 93.

After capturing three conference titles Friday, the Gusties added one more Saturday as Ashley Clemen (Sr., Appleton, Minn./Lac qui Parle Valley) captured the discus title with an NCAA provisional qualifying heave of 141 feet, 2 inches. Anna Bauer (Fy., Hastings, Minn.) took sixth with a toss of 122-10.

Gustavus also scored twice in both the triple jump and the 400-meter dash. Sari Lindeman (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn.), who won the long jump Friday, took second in the triple jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 37-8, tying the Gustavus record she set last year. Laura Lynch (So., Waunakee, Wis.) took fifth with a jump of 35-8. In the 400, Krista Cruse (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) placed fourth with a time of 60.16 seconds, while Elizabeth Pringle (So., Northfield, Minn.) took eighth in 60.63 seconds.

The Gusties also posted a top-three finish in the 4×100 relay. The team of Kelsey Becker (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.), Funto Okanla (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Arlington), Lindeman, and Aryn Bell (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.) finished secon in a time of 49.36 seconds.

Individually, Okanla also took sixth in the 100 (13.10), while Bell finished seventh in the 100 hurdles (16.45).

Also posting point-scoring performances for the Gusties Saturday were Val Berquam (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo), Kaelene Lundstrum (Fy., Bird Island, Minn./BOLD), and the 4×400 relay team of Cruse, Pringle, Kate Sidlo (Fy., Osseo, Minn.), and Sam Madsen (So., Morgan, Minn./Cedar Mountain). Berquam finished seventh in the 3000 steeplechase (11:52.65), Lundstrum took eighth in the high jump (5-1 1/4) and the 4×400 relay finished sixth (4:06.21).

Final selections for the 2007 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be announced Sunday, May 20. This year’s championships will be held at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh May 24-26.
