The Gustavus Adolphus College women’s tennis team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships Sunday with a 5-1 win over Carthage. The Gusties will face Amherst (Mass.) Tuesday, May 15 at the Battleground Athletic Complex on the campus of the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. Individual competition in singles and doubles will follow team competition at each site May 18-20. Women’s individual selections were announced May 1. Lauren Hom (Sr., Stevens Point, Wis.) was selected for the singles draw, while Hom and Sierra Krebsbach (Fy., North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) were selected for the doubles draw.
Third Round (Sunday) – Gustavus Adolphus 5, Carthage 1
The Gustavus women swept through doubles to take a 3-0 lead entering singles play and then extended their lead to 4-0 with 6-1, 6-1 win by Hannah Frericks (Sr., Sartell, Minn./Sartell-St. Stephen) at No. 5 singles over Taylor Gustafson. The Lady Reds cut the lead to 4-1 minutes later as Beth Kaufman posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Darcy Haubrick (Sr., Elk River, Minn.) at No. 6 singles. Lauren Hom clinched the match for Gustavus with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over Amanda Sta. Romana in a battle of two of the region’s top ten singles players. Hom entered the weekend rated fourth, while Sta. Romana was rated eighth. Hom and Sierra Krebsbach, rated second in the Central Region, also picked up an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles over Sta. Romana and Elizca Buys, the region’s third-rated doubles tandem.
Second Round (Saturday) – Gustavus Adolphus 5, Coe 0
The Gustavus Adolphus women opened play Saturday with a 5-0 win over Iowa Conference champion Coe, sweeping doubles and getting singles wins from Hannah Frericks at No. 5 (6-1, 6-1 over Katie Yakes) and from Sierra Krebsbach at No. 4 (6-4, 6-1 over Lindsey Driscoll) to clinch a spot in Sunday’s third round.
