The Gustavus women’s golf team finished second at the Minnesota Collegiate Women’s Golf Association (MWCGA) State Tournament, which was played at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, Minnesota on April 21-22. The Gusties fired a 36-hole total of 328-317—645 and finished six shots behind first place St. Thomas. Breanne Staples finished second individually to lead Gustavus. Rachel Roberg was named Player of the Year and Kali Griggs was named Freshman of the Year by a vote of the MWCGA coaches.
Staples, a senior from Windom, Minnesota, led Gustavus with a 36-hole total of 81-74–155, which allowed her to finish second individually, one shot behind medalist Jordan Mathison of Macalester (77-77–154). Staples’ second day score of 74 was the low round for the tournament. Others contributing for Gustavus included Rachel Roberg (Jr., Rice Lake, Wis.) who placed fourth at 80-80–160, Kali Griggs (Fy., Burnsville, Minn./Visitation) who finished 11th at 84-81–165, Lauren Runsvold (So., Fargo, No. Dak./North), who placed 20th at 83-89–172, and Kimbra Kosak (So., Grand Rapids, Minn.) who finished 24th at 92-82–174. Three players participated individually for Gustavus and that group included Amanda Johnson (Fy., Bemidji, Minn.), who placed 15th at 83-85–168, Jaclyn Dufault (Jr., Crookston, Minn.), who placed 20th at 84-88–172, and Sarah Tracy (Jr., Mahtomedi, Minn.), who placed 43rd at 88-104–192.
Roberg Named Player of the Year, Griggs Named Freshman of the Year
Rachel Roberg (Jr., Rice Lake, Wis.) was named the MWCGA Player of the Year by a vote of the coaches at last weekend’s state tournament. Roberg has led the #2 ranked Gusties all season with a stroke average of 81.6 in 17 rounds. She has posted seven top ten finishes in the eight tournaments Gustavus has competed in during the past fall and this spring. Roberg, who earned medalist honors at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational last September, received All-State honors with a fourth place finish at the MWCGA State Tournament.
Kali Griggs (Burnsville, Minn./Visitation) was named the MWCGA Freshman of the Year by a vote of the coaches at last weekend’s state tournament. Griggs, who has compiled a stroke average of 82.6 in 17 rounds, has been one of the key contributors for the second ranked Gusties all season long. She has posted four top five finishes in eight tournaments including a fourth place finish at the MIAC Championships in October.
