The Gustavus women’s indoor track and field team won a pair of events and racked up four runner-up finishes at Friday’s Pre-MIAC Meet hosted by Carleton College. No team scores were kept. Janna Castellano (Sr., Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace) broke the school record and bettered her NCAA provisional qualifying effort in the pole vault, while Sam Madsen (So., Morgan, Minn./Cedar Mountain) won the 1000-meter run.
As has been the case all season, the Gusties were strong in the field events. Castellano won the pole vault after clearing 11-7 3/4, bettering the old Gustavus indoor mark of 11-6 1/2 set by Kristi Schneider in 2005. Shanna Dawson (Jr., Fairmont, Minn.) finished second with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 11-1 3/4, while Meredith Halling (Fy., Rochester, Minn./Mayo) finished third (10-2). Linda Kanne (So., Franklin, Minn./Cedar Mountain) placed fifth after clearing 9-8.
Anna Bauer (Fy., Hastings, Minn.) added a second-place finish in the weight throw (47-1 1/2) and a fifth-place finish in the shot put (38-4 1/4), Sari Lindeman (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) finished second in the triple jump (36-2), and Kaelene Lundstrum placed (Fy., Bird Island, Minn./BOLD) fourth in the shot put (40-11 3/4). Becca Bryson (Fy., Alden, Minn./Alden-Conger) finished third in the long jump (15-10 1/4) while also placing fifth in the triple jump (34-1 1/2). Laura Lynch (So., Waunakee, Wis.) placed sixth in both the long jump (15-2) and the triple jump (32-11) and Lisa Brown (So., Lake Crystal, Minn./Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial) took sixth in the shot put (37-5).
On the track, Madsen took the 1000 title in a time of 3:10.49 with Heidi Bulfer (Sr., Fairmont, Minn.) taking fourth (3:18.22). Jill Fagerstrom (So., Rosemount, Minn.) and Val Berquam (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo) finished 2-3 in the 3000 with Fagerstrom stopping the clock in 11:08.55 and Berquam in 11:18.62. Raychal Zupancich (Jr., Ely, Minn./Memorial) took third in the 600 (1:49.26) just ahead of teammate Kate Sidlo (Fy., Osseo, Minn./Osseo) in fifth (1:49.93).
Carlie Hanson (Sr., Buffalo, Minn.) added a fourth-place finish in the 400 (62.62), followed by Elizabeth Pringle (So., Northfield, Minn.) in sixth (64.56) and Krista Cruse (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) in seventh (64.96).
The Gustavus 4×200 relay team also took second with a time of 1:50.86.
The Gusties return to the track next Thursday-Saturday, March 1-3 for the MIAC Championships at St. Olaf College in Northfield. The championship weekend kicks off with the pentathlon on Thursday afternoon, followed by the rest of the meet schedule on Friday and Saturday.
