Women’s Basketball Slips Past St. Kate’s 84-75 Posted on January 31st, 2007 by

The Gustavus Adolphus College women’s basketball team continued its winning ways with a 84-75 victory over the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul on Wednesday night. Bri Monahan (Hutchinson, Minn.) and Jess Vadnais (Hudson, Wis.) once again led the Gusties in scoring with 28 and 22 points, respectively. Gustavus improves to 17-2 overall and 14-2 in the MIAC.

The two squads battled very evenly through the first half and the Wildcats went into the locker room at the intermission with a one point lead at 43-42.

The Gusties got off to a quick start in the second half outscoring the Wildcats 19-5 in the first six minutes of play giving Gustavus a 62-47 lead. The Wildcats would make several runs in the final 14 minutes of play, however they were never able to get closer than four points. A 12-4 run over a two minute stretch late in the game, cut the Gustavus lead to four at 79-75 with 1:12 left, however first year point guard Bri Radtke (Winsted, Minn.) made a driving left-handed lay-up and was fouled with :58 seconds left in the game. Radtke made the free throw to extend the Gustie lead to seven at 82-75. Gustavus scored two free throws in the last half-minute to make the final score 84-75.

Gustavus was led in scoring by Bri Monahan with 28 points and Jess Vadnais with 22. Bri Radtke (turned in a a strong performance with 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists.

Vadnais made 8-of-8 free throws in the game extending her consecutive free throw streak to 23 and breaking the school record for free throws made in a season at 108. The previous record was 103 set by Shanna Behrends in the 1994-95 season. Vadnais has now made 41-of-44 from the line over the past seven games. She is shooting .892 from the line this season (108-of-121).

The Gusties will now host St. Mary’s on Saturday at 3:00 pm at Gus Young Court.
