The Gustavus men’s swimming team turned in an impressive performance in Collegeville, Minn. on Saturday winning the St. John’s/St. Ben’s Winter Invite in convincing fashion. The Gusties totalled 1,094 points to finish well ahead of the rest of the field including St. John’s (756), St. Thomas (432), and Hamline (239). The Gusties won eight individual event titles and all three relay titles. Sophomore Matt Stewart (So., Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) won the 200 free and 200 fly, while Brian Amundson (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine) won the 50 free and 100 free.
Others winning individual event titles included Ben Hanson (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) in the 500 yard freestyle, Dave Pearson (So., Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater), Josh Waylander (Sr., Montevideo, Minn.) in the 200 backstroke, and Skylar Davis (Fy., Palatine, Ill.) in the 400 yard individual medley.
Gustavus also finished first in three relays including the 400 medley, the 200 freestyle, and the 800 freestyle.
Several swimmers had several top three finishes on the day including Ben Hanson who added a second place finish in the 200 free, and a third place finish in the 100 free to go with his first place finish in the 500 free. Others included Scott Hagemeyer (Sr., Willmar, Minn.) who finished second in the 100 back and second in the 100 free, Andrew Howard (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) who finished second in the one-meter diving and third in the three-meter diving, Kevin Horn (So., Omaha, Nebr./Millard West) who placed second in the 200 back, and Connor Ziegler (Jr., Sauk Rapids, Minn.) who finished second in the 100 fly.
