The Gustavus men’s golf team fired a final-round 333 to place third at the Twin Cities Classic on Monday. The Gusties’ three-day total of 929 was 15 strokes off the pace set by team champion UW-Eau Claire (914) and nine back of runner-up Saint John’s (920). UW-Eau Claire’s Robert Norris took medalist honors win a 7-over-par total of 223, three shots ahead of Luther’s Ben Hanson.
Senior Erik Tone (Willmar, Minn.) finished tied for ninth individually with a 54-hole total of 229 (+13), firing a final-round 83 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska. Junior Jordan Hawkinson (Lindstrom, Minn.) finished tied for 11th, one stroke behind Tone, after posting a round of 82 on Monday. Juniors Arie DeGrio (Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Kyle Rohlfs (Fergus Falls, Minn.) and first-year Ricky Copeland (Mahtomedi, Minn.) finished in a group of eight players with 236 totals, tied for 26th. Copeland, along with Tone and Hawkinson, played with the Gustavus Gold team, while DeGrio played with Gustavus White and Rohlfs with Gustavus Black.
Mark Stuckey (Jr., St. Peter, Minn.) finished tied for 39th (238) and Eric Harris (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) was tied for 63rd (245) to round out the Gustavus Gold team.
Also playing for the Gustavus White team were Nick Greve (Sr. Annandale, Minn.) (tie-61st, 244), Josh Curb (Fy., Bemidji, Minn.) (tie-78th, 251), Chris Cole (Jr., New London, Minn.) (tie-84th, 253) and Kevin Horn (So., Omaha, Neb.) (tie-88th, 255).
Greg Palm (Fy., Orinda, Calif.) (tie-56th, 243), A.J. Olson (Fy., White Bear Lake, Minn.) (tie-73rd, 249), Derek Hilding (Fy., Willmar, Minn.) (tie-82nd, 252) and Dan Barthell (So., Bloomington, Minn.) (tie-90th, 258) also carded scores for the Gustavus Black team.
Gustavus will close out its fall schedule Oct. 30-31 at the Royal Lakes/Oglethorpe University Invitational in Chestnut Mountain, Ga.
