The Gustavus Adolphus women’s golf team edged Wartburg by a single stroke Sunday to capture the Division III Midwest Classic. The Gusties fired a team score of 334, while the Knights carded a score of 335 on a very challenging layout at Troy Burne Golf Club in Hudson, Wis. University of St. Thomas (342) was third followed by UW-Eau Claire (346). The tournament was shortened to 18 holes after Saturday’s first round was washed out by inclement weather.
Gustavus’ Breanne Staples (Sr., Windom, Minn.) captured medalist honors with a 77, four shots better than Wartburg’s Megan Cress. Rachel Roberg (Jr., Rice Lake, Wis.) finished third with an 82, while Kimbra Kosak (So., Grand Rapids, Minn.) fired an 86 to finish in a tie for 16th place. Kali Griggs (Fy., Burnsville, Minn.) carded an 89 to finish in a 22nd-place tie, while Lauren Runsvold (So., Fargo, N.D.) rounded out the Gustie effort with a 97.
The Gusties will compete at the Winona State Invitational next weekend (Sept. 30-Oct. 1), their final tune-up before the MIAC Championships at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids Oct. 7-9.
