Gustavus men’s soccer defeated Nebraska Wesleyan 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in St. Peter. The Gusties scored about 11 minutes into the game and never looked back. Matt Broin scored the first and third goals for Gustavus, while Jeffrey Johnson notched the second goal. The Gusties extended their current three-game winning streak and remain undefeated this season with a record of 3-0-1. The Prairie Wolves fall to 1-2-0 on the season.

Gustavus’ first goal came with over 33 minutes to play in the first half. Broin (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) shot the ball past Nebraska Wesleyan’s keeper, Josh Miller for a 1-0 lead. Almost six minutes after the first goal, Johnson (Jr., Tonka Bay, Minn.) scored on a foul kick that beat Miller on the ground and to his right. Gustavus ended the first half up 2-0.

In the second half, Gustavus, again, came out strong and scored nearly six minutes into the half. In a mess of players in front of the net Broin emerged with the ball and shot it past Miller for a 3-0 lead. Nearly a minute after the third goal the Gusties had a great opportunity for a four-goal lead when Neil Nelson (Sr., Edina, Minn.) passed the ball across the net to Ryan Beduhn (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn.) who just missed the net wide right. The game ended with Gustavus on top 3-0.

The Gusties outshot the Prairie Wolves 18-6, while leading in corner kicks 10-0. Tyler Garry (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) recorded five saves in the shutout. Miller stopped eight shots while taking the loss for Nebraska Wesleyan.

Gustavus will host the Carleton Knights in the MIAC season opener on Wednesday at 4:00 pm. Next Saturday the team will host Concordia-Moorhead in another MIAC matchup.
