Gustavus will participate in the MIAC Baseball Tournament this weekend.

The Gustavus Adolphus baseball team has qualified for the seventh annual Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament this weekend in Northfield and Dundas. The Gusties, seeded third, will face No. 2 seed St. Olaf in a first-round matchup at 3:30 p.m. Friday in Northfield’s Sechler Park. Top-seeded St. Thomas will face No. 4 seed Hamline at the same time at Memorial Park in Dundas in the other first-round game.

Since the MIAC Baseball Tournament began in 2000, the Tommies and Oles are the only two schools to qualify for all seven tournaments. St. Thomas is 16-4 all-time with five titles (’00, ’01, ’02, ’04, ’05), while St. Olaf is 12-12 with one title (’03). Gustavus is 3-4 all-time and is making its third appearance in the field. The Gusties fell to St. Thomas in the 2004 championship game. Hamline is making its first appearance in the tournament, leaving Carleton as the only MIAC program to have never participated in the league tournament.

Gustavus is 2-4 this season against this year’s MIAC Tournament field, splitting doubleheaders on the road with Hamline (5-3 and 0-8) and St. Olaf (0-11 and 6-1), while being swept at home by St. Thomas (0-6 and 2-3 in 11 innings) during the first week of conference play.

The double-elimination tournament is scheduled to conclude Saturday with the champion claiming the MIAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championships.
