The Gustavus women’s golf team began its spring season with an important first place finish at the 11-team Wartburg Invitational in Waverly, Iowa. The Gusties posted a 36-hole total of 313-331—644 to finish six shots ahead of host Wartburg at 322-328—650. Gustie senior Kelli Groff claimed medalist honors with a total of 74-79—153.
First year Kimbra Kosak placed sixth individually with a total of 78-85—163, junior Breanne Staples finished ninth at 84-80—164, and senior Alana Reetz placed 10th with a total of 80-85—165. Other scores for Gustavus included Erin Schliep at 84-82—166, and Rachel Roberg at 81-86—167.
The tournament was important because it was the only time this spring that the top three teams in the region, St. Thomas (1), Gustavus (2), and Wartburg (3), will face-off in the same tournament. The three teams are likely battling for two spots in the NCAA Championship, which will take place in early May. The win for the Gusties gives them an important head-to-head win over both St. Thomas and Wartburg with two weeks left before the NCAA Tournament bids are announced.
