The fourth-rated Gustavus women’s tennis team fell for the first time this season to a Division III school Wednesday as second-rated Washington and Lee defended it home court, defeating the Gusties 6-3. The Gusties swept the three doubles matches, but was unable to produce a victory against a tough Generals single line-up.

At #1 doubles, Gustavus’ Tara Houlihan and Lyndsey Palen, the Central Region’s top rated doubles team, posted an 8-2 victory over Emily Applegate and Kristen McClung, the Atlantic South Region’s second-rated doubles team.

Lauren Hom and Marla Menne, the second-rated team in the Central region, gave the Gusties a second doubles win with an 8-5 win over Katie Tabb and Ginny Wortham at #2 doubles. Tabb and Wortham are currently rated fourth in the Atlantic South Region.

Darcy Haubrick and Jenni White completed the Gustie doubles sweep with an 8-2 win over Lisa Mabry and Leah Weston at #3 doubles.

The Generals, with four singles players rated in the top 15 of the Atlantic South region, took control of the match during singles play, though, dropping only one set en route to the sweep.

Gustavus will face #8 Willams Thursday morning in the final match of the Fab Five Women’s Tennis Tournament.
