The Gustavus Adolphus softball team saw its record evened at 4-4 Monday with a pair of wins at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Cape Coral, Florida. The Gusties used a pair of three-run innings to move past Colby 7-4 in the morning and then came back to post a 5-1 win over Fredonia State (N.Y.).
Junior Joyce DeWitz (Good Thunder, Minn.) led the Gusties in the morning game against Colby, holding the Mules in check at the plate for five innings. She allowed only one hit while striking out four. First-year Bree Lindenberg (Faribault, Minn.) pitched the final two innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out three.
Offensively, the Gusties scored seven runs on eight hits, while holding the Mules to four runs on eight hits. Mary Furlong (Sr., Mound, Minn.) and Rachael Click (Fy., Rochester, Minn.) each picked up multiple hits for Gustavus, with Click driving in three.
Against Fredonia, the Gusties jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as sophomore Julie Mahre (White Bear Lake, Minn.) led off the game with a triple and later scored on a wild pitch. Mahre, Emily Klein (Fy., Red Wing, Minn.) and Allison Haase (So., Blue Earth, Minn.) each finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
First-year Sarah Manke (Roseville, Minn.) pitched well in getting the win, allowing one run on three hits in six innings of work while walking three and striking out three. DeWitz pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief.
Gustavus will have an off day Tuesday before wrapping up its Spring Break trip with games against Massachusetts Institute of Technology and UW-Whitewater on Wednesday. The Gusties will open the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Augsburg.
