Gustavus junior forward Phil Sowden (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) has been named MIAC Men’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 12, 2006. Sowden averaged 20.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game as Gustavus won three games last week and clinched a MIAC playoff berth. Sowden shares this week’s award with St. Thomas guard Brian Schnettler.

Sowden scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds in an 85-75 win at Bethel on Monday. He then contributed 20 points and recorded six rebounds in a 63-54 win at St. Olaf on Wednesday and finished the week with 18 points and 15 rebounds in a 70-50 home win over Augsburg Saturday afternoon. Sowden shot 60.0 percent (24-of-40) from the field and 81.3 percent from the free throw line (13-16) in the three games.

Sowden is the second Gustavus men ‘s basketball player to take home player of the week honors this season following Trevor Wittwer (Dec. 5).

Gustavus is 17-6 overall and 12-6 in the MIAC heading into the final week of regular season play in the MIAC. Sowden is averaging 12.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in 23 starts for the Gusties this season.
