Carleton Upends Women’s Swimming and Diving 165-135 Posted on January 14th, 2006 by

Sophomore Sara Pfau (Bismarck, N.D.) picked up individual titles in three events and a runner-up finish as a member of the 200 medley relay, but Gustavus could only capture wins in six of 16 events as Carleton edged the Gusties 165-135 in a dual at Carleton’s Thorpe Pool on Saturday.

Pfau won the 100 backstroke (1:02.91), 200 backstroke (2:17.25) and the 200 individual medley (2:18.55), while joining with sophomore Allyson Sheldrew (Princeton, Minn.), first-year Emma Espel (Fargo, N.D.) and junior Laura Watkins (Fargo, N.D.) for the runner-up finish in the 200 medley relay. Pfau edged Carleton’s Caitlin Clements-Green in both backstroke events.

Senior Kara Yetter (Shakopee, Minn.) swept the diving events with fellow senior Dani Wright (Wayzata, Minn.) finishing second in both competitions.

Yoshi Ludwig (Jr., St. Peter, Minn.) picked up the remaining Gustie victory, winning the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:19.86, just 0.10 seconds ahead of Carleton’s Kaarin Taylor. Gustavus’ Britta Nelson (Fy., Morrison, Colo.) finished third, 1.05 seconds behind Ludwig. Ludwig also picked up a pair of runner-up finishes, placing second Pfau in the 200 individual medley and Carleton’s Becky Anderson in the 100 butterfly.

Espel captured a trio of second place finishes. In addition to her finish as a member of the 200 medley relay, Espel also finished second in the 100 freestyle (57.12) and 200 freestyle (2:02.95). She also added a fourth place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:04.33).

Watkins, junior Elizabeth Hartman (Eagan, Minn.) and first-years Emily Degnan (Hibbing, Minn.) and Krista Koenen (Willmar, Minn.) teamed to finish second in the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:49.35 clocking.

Sophomore Larkin Davis (Palatine, Ill.) also recorded a second-place finish in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:24.62.

The Gusties will return to action next weekend (Jan. 20-21) at the UW-Stevens Point Invitational.
