Gustavus Adolphus College sophomore forward Sami Idris (Gothenburg, Sweden/Burgarden) has been named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Hockey Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 8, 2006. Idris scored a goal and five assists for six points as the Gusties swept Lawrence (5-2) and UM-Crookston (10-2) this weekend in the Gustavus Hockey Showcase. He is the third straight Gustie to be named MIAC Player of the Week after senior defenseman Keith Detlefsen (Dec. 5) and junior forward Mike Hosfield (Dec. 12).

Idris recorded a goal in Saturday’s 5-2 win over Lawrence and then scored five assists in Sunday’s 10-2 win over UM-Crookston. The five assists were one short of a Gustavus school record that was set in 1976 and tied later that season. Idris assisted on the first Gustavus goal of the game as well as all three second period goals. He is the sixth leading scorer for the Gusties this season with 5 goals and 9 assists for 14 points. The Gusties, currently 9-2-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the MIAC, lead the nation in scoring offense at 6.00 goals per game.
